"Remember, its all about lifestyle, Chris"... the client said after the second day of an extended location tour of Brazil and Colombia. A paradox for a photographer, to show the architecture and design of retail centres... precise detail, long exposures... and yet capture the lifestyle of mall visitors, their activities and movement to give a feeling for the dynamic of the shopping centre experience. All this, keeping an in the moment spontaneity without staged models or props. Some challenge, and a challenge Christopher has largely achieved in these images.
A highly regarded photographer for international architects describes Christopher and his work by saying He always brings so much vitality to his work. Vitality defines him. He loves life, it bubbles out of him as if carbonated and given a good shake. Very inspiring. Most of these photographs are recent and depict current trends in designing shopping malls and centres toward a lifestyle, community feel where indoor-outdoor planning provides a town center drawing the public to look at a fresh and exciting retail experience.
Designcorp, the international planning and design consulting firm is at the leading edge of mixed-use projects and lifestyle centres full of energy. This was acknowledged when, with considerable support from Christophers strong photography shown here, they were winners of the gold and silver awards at the 2008 ICSC in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Added to these was the silver awarded to Ivanhoe Cambridge at the Canadian ICSC.
